TACTICAL SHOTGUN FUN SHOOT

The Lemon Grove Rod & Gun Club Board has approved a TACTICAL SHOTGUN FUN SHOOT on an interim basis, until we can once again re-establish our FUN PISTOL SHOOT/REVOLVER MATCH. The announcement of the details of the match are stated below. Handgun shooters-- if you do not have a shotgun, come anyway and borrow a shotgun from another participant. You need to bring all other gear (like shot shells).

Several of our regular participants have asked if we could have a TACTICAL SHOTGUN SHOOT in place of the FUN PISTOL SHOOT/REVOLVER MATCH until we once again get the range open to rifle and handgun shooting. Such an event will be similar to the FUN PISTOL SHOOT/REVOLVER MATCH only using shotguns. Here is how it will work:

  • Date and Time: The same date as for the FUN PISTOL SHOOT/REVOLVER MATCH—the first Sunday of the month with July 1st being the first event. We will use the same setup schedule: setup at 8:00 a.m. and shoot starting at 9:00 a.m. A safety briefing will precede the match, along with stage descriptions. We expect to be done around noon. We need volunteers to help design the stages and help with the setup.

  • Targets: Targets will be steel reactive targets, clays or steel plates. Jim Dickinson has offered to bring some of the Linea de Fuego targets that throw a can into the air after a steel plate is shot (sounds like fun).

  • Stages: Set up five or six stages using the Pit (two) and the trap ranges along with the rifle range. Stage builders will define the course description and number of shots required at each stage. Target engagement will be from shooting boxes, behind fault lines, behind barriers or through shooting ports.

  • Equipment: Any shotgun will work. There will be two divisions defined as "Tactical" or "Sporting." Tactical shotguns may load up to four rounds in the magazine with one in the chamber and store extra shot shells on the gun. Sporting shotguns will be limited to two rounds loaded at a time and must be reloaded from a pocket, bag, fanny pack or any location not on the gun. The maximum shot size to be permitted is #7 ½ . You will need 60-80 shot shells, but bring more to make sure.

  • Scoring: The score will be the total time taken to engage all targets plus any penalty points for misses, failure to engage, foot faults and the normal rules used in the handgun games. If you want the scoring results, I will send the results out by e-mail after the match to those who provide their e-mail addresses on the scoring sheets. If you do not want your score shared, then do not turn in your scoring sheet and you will remain anonymous (this is first and foremost a FUN shoot).

  • Safety Rules: All shotguns will remain unloaded with the action open at all times unless the participant is under the control of a range safety officer and is engaging targets. Side-by-side or over and under shotguns may be closed while placed in the rack. Muzzles must be pointed downrange at all times while targets are being engaged. Eye and ear protection is required for both participants and spectators. Shot shells are limited to #7 ½ shot or smaller to prevent shot from leaving the Range.

  • Shooter fees: The same as the FUN PISTOL SHOOT at $5 for club members and $10 for guests.

This is a new event and will involve some trial and error. Please feel free to share your ideas on how to make this event better as we evolve the format.
